Jump into Spring with March Events

The community is invited to jump into March with a variety of exciting events open to the public at Washington College. Spring into the new season with the arts, exploring the connections between nature, food and health, and learning about radical solidarity and what it means to be unified across differences.  

Launch into Spring – Cherry Tree Issue 11 reading 

The Washington College Rose O’Neill Literary House is proud to present Cherry Tree’s “Launch into Spring” issue 11 reading. Cherry Tree, a nationally recognized literary journal, publishes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and literary shade from both new and emerging writers around the world. The public is welcome to hear the contributing authors and editors of issue 11 share their work. The virtual reading will be open to the public on Wednesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. over Zoom. The event is free, however registration is required to receive the access link. More information can be found here.  

Annual Goodfellow Lecture: Radical Solidarity: Ruth Reynolds, Political Allyship, and the Battle for Puerto Rico's Independence 

The community is invited to join Washington College in welcoming Professor Lisa G. Materson, professor of modern U.S. women's political history at the University of California at Davis, as she delivers the History Department's annual Goodfellow Lecture. Introducing the idea of “radical solidarity,” Materson will recount the story of Ruth Reynolds (1916–1989), a white pacifist who emerged as a steadfast ally of nationalist revolutionaries during Puerto Rico's prolonged fight for independence, capturing Reynolds’ transformation from quiet observer to vocal activist. Ultimately, Materson will explore the power of unity in the face of colonial violence. The lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, March 18, at 4:30 p.m. in Hynson Lounge, located in Hodson Hall Commons, and will be open to the public.  

Roots of Health: The Intersection of Food and Well-Being 

The College welcomes the public to join Shane Brill, a functional nutritional therapy practitioner and the Lifelong Learning Coordinator at Washington College, for a discussion on the connections between food, health, and the natural world. Brill will explore how the earth and the human body are interconnected and how caring for the environment can promote healing for both. This event will be held in the Hynson Lounge, located in Hodson Hall Commons, on Wednesday, March 19, at noon. The talk is open to the public, and tickets, priced at $30 for general admissions, are available for purchase on the event listing. 

“To Survive Or To Live,” a Playwrighting SCE by Faith Jarrell | directed by Jai Basu 

The Washington College Drama Department is proud to present “To Survive Or To Live,” a playwriting Senior Capstone Experience (SCE). Written by senior Faith Jarrell and directed by junior Jai Basu, this original piece follows the story of four friends as they struggle to navigate their place in the world and what it truly means to be alive. The performances, open to the public, will take place on Friday, March 21, and Saturday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Tawes Theatre, located in the Gibson Center for the Arts. Tickets will be available here starting March 1. A donation to the Kent County Food Pantry can be brought in lieu of tickets.  

Pippin: A Musical by Stephen Schwartz 

The Washington College Music Department is proud to present “Pippin: A Musical” by Stephen Schwartz. The performances will take place Thursday, March 27; Friday, March 28; and Saturday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Decker Auditorium at the Daniel Z. Gibson Center for the Arts. The show will be open to the public, with tickets priced at $10 for general admissions. More information can be found here
